Demons are disembodied spirits that are at work virtually everywhere in the world today. They are evil in nature, and are obedient to Satan, their ruler. In the Bible they are also known as “evil spirits” or “unclean spirits”.
Satan is a limited creature who can only be in one place at a time. He relies on his network of evil spirits and human servants to get his works done. These evil spirits have all the characteristics of personality. They are evil, malicious, deceptive and never to be trusted. Based on God’s Word we can see that demons possess and try to control the following:
“Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!” (Mark 1:23-24)
“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ ” (Luke 11:24)
“You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe – and tremble!” (James 2:19).
Identity and Self-Awareness
“Then He asked him, ‘What is your name?’ And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” (Luke 8:30)
Just as there are angels who look out for your welfare, there are angles who are bent upon your destruction. The Bible teaches that when Satan fell from heaven, he took one-third of the angles with him (Rev 12:4). Although we do not know their exact number, Scripture tells us there are multitudes (Luke 2:13) and legions (Matthew 26:53) of angles. So Satan has a sizable, highly organized army under his control. These fallen angles, also known as demons, help Satan accomplish his purpose, which, in the words of Christ, is to steal, deceive, kill and destroy. While the Bible does not give us specific details as to how demons work, we can be confident that everything we need to know about them is found in Scripture. We do not need to look else-where for insights into in the spiritual World. See what God’s Word has to say about these evil agents we call demons.
- What do Demons Believe? Strange as it may seem, demons acknowledge that there is only one God (see James 2:19).
- Can Demons Personally Harm you? Those people who have a true relationship with Christ cannot be overcome by demons: those who do not, are “fair game” for these servants of Satan (see Acts 19:13-20).
- What makes Demons Powerless? The name of Jesus used by the followers Jesus makes the demons tremble (see Luke 10:1-20).
