SBC – Battle for the Mind – Pt7

Pastor Tim talks about Fearful Thinking and how it’s not pleasing to God. He relates a personal experience in how he was fearful at a time in his life until realizing it was more important to trust in God with his fears. Psalm 56:3,11 and 2 Tim 1:7.

Why is it hard to trust God sometimes and why would we fear something if we know God is in Control? (Psalm 131:1-2) Fear = Worry, Depression, Hopelessness and Despair. Satan loves to use those fearful times we experience in life to try and convince us that God has failed us, but we must look to the Lord for help when we face these fears. Psalm 61:1-2, 1 Peter 5:7-8. Tim discusses Paul and how he faced and overcame fear in his life ( 1 Cor 1:8-11, 2 Cor 4:8). What was the Light Affliction that Paul talked about? 2 Cor 11:22-28, Phil 4:12-13.

What does God really want to see in us? Tim discusses the important things God is looking for in our character. He talks about the Biblical definition of Hope which is a confident expectation and firm assurance regarding things that are unclear and unknown (Romans 8:24-25,Hebrews 11:1,7). David talks to himself about this Hope in (Psalms 43:5,38:18,31:34,38:15). If we turn to God as David did we have this trustful hope and a general confidence in God’s protection and help (Jeremiah 29:11) and we are free from our fear and anxiety (Psalm 46:2-3, 1 Peter 3:14-15)

Tim finishes by talking about a Joyful Heart and what the difference is between Joy and Happiness is (2 Cor 8:2,Psalm 5:11,104:34,Nehemiah 8:10). It’s interesting the word Joy is related to difficultly in the Bible and Happiness is related to God who never changes. The word Happiness is only used about 30 times in the Bible when the word Joy is used 300 times, why do you think this is?

We should remember that our disappointments in life are usually God’s appointments, so we should never fear or lose hope because we serve a God of the impossible, Amen!

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart  be acceptable in Your sight,  O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

SBC – Battle for the Mind – Pt6

Pastor Tim talks about the 1st battle of Stinking Thinking and in how we are sometimes so critical of other Christians who might not be walking in the spirit – 1 Cor 3:1-2. He discusses how Satan always tries to divide and conquer by tempting people to gossip and say bad things about others. How would that person feel if they knew what was being said about them?  Why shouldn’t Christians hang around people like this who are constantly tearing others down and what are the dangers of this – Romans 16:17-18, 1 Corinthians 1:10? What can we do if we are confronted with others like this – Phil 4:8?

Tim talks about some of the questions he asks others when counseling pre-marriage couples. What are these questions and is there a flip side to the same questions after a year of marriage? What should marriage couple focus on to avoid conflicts and division in marriage?

Pastor Tim talks about the 2nd battle of Wicked Thinking and what the Bible says about Lust, Hatred, Cheating and Lying – Genesis 6:5, Psalm 64:6, Psalm 66:18 & Mat 23:25-28. Jesus is concern about what is on the mind and not about what’s on the outside since if the inside is wholesome the outside will be too. How can we eliminate evil thoughts and turn them into wholesome thoughts?  Listen in as Tim answers these questions that we all constantly struggle with in our minds.

SBC – Battle for the Mind – Pt5

Pastor Tim talks about how Satan is constantly trying to fill our minds with bad thoughts. We should know that we cannot go head to head with Satan, so we need something that will give us victory over the sinful thoughts that attempt to ensnare the mind – 1 John 4:4.  Tim talks about how yielding to the spirit will help to identify and reject these unwholesome thoughts in order to have victory over them. He compares the mind to a strong hold that keeps sin deeply entrenched and ingrained that is constantly justified as being ok.  Why do people have strong holds in their mind and try to justify sinful things when they know God would disapprove of it? For example, why do people Gossip, when they know it could hurt someone else – Proverbs 16:28, Proverbs 11:13? Why do people have hatred towards others even against other Christians, when they know it’s against God’s standard and compared to murder – Matthew 5:21-22?  Why are people envy and jealous of others when they know it’s wrong – Exodus 20:17.  Tim talks about these questions and where these thoughts come from (James 4:1) and how to have victory over them.  When thoughts are contrary to God we need to choose not to go there – (James 1:14-15), so what can we do if we have sinful and unwholesome thoughts that are contrary to God? God has provided us the Word of God as our Shield and the Spirit of God as our Sword to deal with these sinful thoughts at its conception and before it’s put into action.

Tim also revisits some questions regarding, could Jesus have sinned during the temptation? He looks at the Hypostatic (Personal) Union which comes from the Greek word hupostasis and is talked about in Hebrews 1:3. He talks about Jesus having two complete natures—one fully human and one fully divine.  Therefore,  the Hypostatic union is the joining of the divine and the human in the one person of Jesus, so with Man and God joined together they cannot be separated nor can either one sin – James 1:13

SBC – Battle for the Mind – Pt4

Pastor Tim continues talking about the children coming out of Egypt and traveling into the land of Canaan and how God continually led them into trials along the way to help strengthen their faith and teach them. Why did they continually lose faith during these trials even though God kept his promise to provide for them? Could it be that maybe Satan was trying to alter their thinking in how they looked at God, just like with Eve in the garden? Could this happen even today?

Tim also talks about the temptation of Christ and whether or not God’s Son could have been tempted by Satan during Jesus’ 40 day standoff in the desert. Why did God allow Jesus to be tempted in the first place knowing that Jesus would not fail – Hebrews 4:15? What would have happened if Jesus would have bowed down and worshiped Satan?

Tim explains these questions and compares these situations with others in the Bible who were also tempted by Satan to make wrong choices. Some chose the will of God and were blessed while others chose the way of Satan and faced terrible consequences. Which direction will you choose when your mind becomes ensnared by sinful thoughts? The Bible tells us that the road to sin begins in your thought life – (Mark 7:21-22, James 1:14-15 & James 4:1). Therefore we should learn to identify and reject unwholesome thoughts and make it a habit to think about things that are pure and true, so that sinful thoughts are never put into action – (Romans 8:5, Phil 4:8 & Heb 3:1)

Luke 4:1-12, 1John 3:5, Hebrews 4:15 & Deut 8:3

“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be
tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.” - James 1:13

SBC – Battle for the Mind – Pt3

Pastor Tim talks about when others are saved they sometimes think there will never be trials or hardships in life. As Christians we know this is not true since God places trials in people’s lives to help them grow. There’s an old saying “An expectation is a resentment waiting to happen” We see this with the story of Moses when he delivers God’s people from Egypt. What did Moses continually battle with his people? Does this happen in our society today?

Key verses for this lesson:
1 Cor 10:13 Eph 5:4 Col 1:12 Col 3:15 Col 4:2, 1 Thes 5:18, Heb 13:15, Psalms 100:4

SBC – Battle for the Mind – Pt2

Pastor Tim talks about what might have been on Eve’s mind when she was being tempted by Satan at the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Why was Eve even at the tree of knowledge of good and evil when God specifically said not to eat of its fruit? Why did Eve tell Satan that God said neither shall you touch it, lest you die, when God never said anything about touching the fruit, just eating it?  Does Satan lie? What would happen if he told others the truth? Listen in as Tim explains these questions and more as he continues looking at the struggles we deal with in the mind.

SBC – Battle for the Mind – Pt1

Pastor Tim, starts a new series about the greatest thing that all Christians face, which is the battle for the mind.  In this series he will discuss who we wrestle with in the mind and how to have victory and get control of the mind – Eph 6:12.

In this message Tim talks about the power of Satan and how he attempts to take control over minds through the use of the Internet, music, media and even pulpits.  He looks at several verses including Eph 2:2 which talks about Satan being the prince of the power of the air, why the air? Listen in as Tim talks about this and how Satan uses these tactics in attempt to control the minds of others.

Tim also discusses other verses in God’s Word that deal with the mind and how others can learn to control the battle within the mind on the inside before it’s put into action on the outside.
