SBC – God’s Faithfulness in Overcoming Our Fearfulness – Acts 28:13

Pastor Tim talks about faith and the promises of God. When we walk w/ God he prepares us for the things we will experience in life. As Paul arrives at an Italian port of Puteoli, Paul is greeted by other believers and was allowed to stay with them for 7 days. When Paul arrives in Rome is he greeted by more believers as they had been expecting the apostle’s arrival as they came to encourage him. We live in such a divided world; Paul was probably comforted knowing he had family waiting when he arrived.

As Tim explains, it is important even today to surround yourself with other believers for encouragement and hope to avoid facing problems alone (Hebrews 10:25). Paul wastes no time in his ministry in Rome as he proclaims the gospel too many as others ask him what he believes. When someone asks you this question, what would you tell them and are you prepared to give an account of your faith? What did Paul tell them? And why did some believe and some not? Tim finishes by answering these questions, explains what happens to Paul in Rome and what he writes to Timothy before his death.

“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.” Phil 1:12-13

SBC – Availability for Ministry – Acts 28:1-10

Pastor Tim talks about our availability to be ready to serve God inside and outside the Church. God will always provide ministry opportunities outside the Church when we are walking with the Lord. We see this again with Paul after a storm and shipwreck leaves him and others stranded on the Island of Malta, was this an accident, hardly,  but rather God’s plan to establish a minister for these islanders. These islanders notice a uniqueness with Paul because of his actions towards others. This uniqueness led to curiosity among the islanders as Paul goes the extra mile to help them. What does God say about going the extra mile in Mat 5:41?

As Paul is helping to build a fire he is bitten by a poisonous viper, but just shakes it off. This was God’s way of showing that there was something different about him. Tim finishes with a story of how Darwin visits an island off the South Seas searching for missing links, He thought he was onto something when he finds an island full of cannibals, but when he later returned, he found something totally different, something had changed these people. This change forced Darwin to recant his statement regarding the false missing links he found. What did he find when he returned to the island that was so compelling for him to recant his statement?

Listen in as Tim describes this and Paul’s empowering ministry as people witness the healing power of God through Paul’s ministry on the island of Malta.

“Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! “ Hebrews 13:2

SBC – Why the Storms of Life – Acts 27:20-44

Pastor Tim talks about storms that we might face in our lives that we have no control over because God is the Commander and Chief of Storms. He knows exactly when they will occur, why we face them and most importantly how to help us through them.

Tim compares these storms of life with a literal storm that Paul is facing as he travels to Rome on a ship full of Roman Soldiers. As in all storms, God wants to know whether or not we really trust him. We see this with Paul as God develops his faith as they sail into a storm.  Paul warns the Soldiers that God promises safety for all, but they must do as Paul instructs per God’s message to him? How do you think they responded to this? Maybe as per the illustration?

Paul is reminded by an angel of three things during this voyage to help remind him that he must remain faithful. Listen in and find out if these soldiers learn something from Paul’s faithful words and whether God keeps His promise to save all those on board the ship when they approach rocks coming into land and are forced to abandoned ship.

SBC – The Almost Christian – Acts 26:23

Pastor Tim talks about how people side step the truth sometimes their entire life and never really make a final commitment to follow Christ, it might be almost, but never final. Why is that? Tim compares this situation with King Aggrippa as he wants to hear Paul’s message, but just like in our society today others constantly try to discredit the messenger. As Paul presents the Gospel message, King Aggrippa attempts to divert from the message and tells Paul you Almost persuaded me to be a Christian. What does almost mean, why would we want to weaver between Christ and the World?

Tim finishes with Paul’s departure from the message where Paul explains that to almost hit the mark, is really to miss it and he reinforces there will be no almost Christians in Heaven, but only those that have made a sincere commitment to trust and follow Him. What will your Christian family say when you die? Don’t let this be their response “He was almost saved!”

“Almost Persuaded” by Philip Bliss
“Almost” cannot avail;
“Almost” is but to fail!
Sad, sad, that bitter wail,
“Almost” – but lost.

“But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:6

SBC – The Perils of People Pleasing – Acts 25:1

Pastor Tim talks about as we live and walk in this world. Who do we need to please above all, people or God? Should we do what is right or just do what is popular? He compares this to Festus as the new Governor of Judea is faced with how to handle the false charges people have made against Paul. Instead of doing what he knew was right with Paul and following it, he comprised truth to just be a people pleaser and do what was wrong. As Festus tries to convince Caesar of Paul’s charges with no evidence, he finds himself in a complicated situation with Ceasar. Have you ever faced something like this in your life where you try to make up something because maybe you didn’t make the right decision from the start? Listen in as Tim discusses Festus’ situation and gives a example of this with a fishing story gone bad.

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10

SBC – Motivation for Procrastination – Acts 24:1

astor Tim talks about how as humans we tend to put important things off in our busy lives because either we feel conviction or we just don’t want to do it. Could there be consequences when we say no to God (James 4:7)? He compares this situation with Felix as he hears the accusations against Paul. Paul exposes the weakness of the case against him, explains his ministry, why he was arrested and makes it clear that he has not abandoned God or the Law; instead he is acting in fulfillment of them both.

After Felix hears Paul’s case, he avoids making a legal decision, why?  Was Felix feeling conviction towards his spiritual priorities? Tim finishes by talking about the result of the trial and what the end result was for Felix after leaving Paul in prison for 2yrs following the trial. Maybe hearing the gospel made Felix afraid; knowing his past life. The gospel should make those who are intent on rejecting Jesus afraid. Procrastination of truth against God is dangerous. Tim explains, there’s a deadline coming in our life one day and we all need to make a decision to follow Christ while He is near (Hebrews 9:27).

SBC – Does God Really Care? – Acts 22:24

Does God really care about us and our needs? Pastor Tim addresses this question as he looks at the example of Paul and how God was with him, giving Him wisdom as how to deal with every situation he encountered. Examples of this was when Paul is speaking to the riotous crowd, reminding the centurion of the Roman law concerning flogging a Roman Citizen, speaking boldly to the Sadducees telling them that he was a Pharisee and that he believed in the resurrection. It was obvious that Paul had faith and trusted that God would protect him.

Tim discusses Paul’s condition here as he declares his rights and is faced with unbelieving opposition and divulging plans to kill him. Listen in and see how God again helps Paul in this situation through the use of his nephew.

“Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2

SBC – The Elements of a Clear Testimony – Acts 22:1

Pastor Tim explains the key elements and tools that make up a clear testimony that will help open blind eyes to the gospel. We live in a world where there are many personal testimonies today that obviously lack credibility, power or authority. So how can one give a clear testimony of Christ that is creditable and powerful that someone would believe, like we see here with Paul?

Paul faced this many times in his life, where others doubted him, but it was his personal encounter with Jesus Christ that empowered him to speak about truth and love and he spoke it out of obedience to the God who desired all men to be saved (Romans 10:13) and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Tim compares Paul’s testimony with others and explains how others can use his experience and tools when witnessing to others. Tim talks about our BC (Before Christ) in life and how through clear testimonies, others can find a belief and blessing in Christ. He finishes by explaining the main purpose of biblical baptism once someone excepts Christ as Savior 1 Cor 1:17.

Paul found ways to find the social, historical, mental, emotional, religious and spiritual keys to hearts of his audience. He also knew that every person has locked doors to protect their emotional inner being. Good communicators learn how to connect and adapt to the perceptions of every individual in their audience. We should learn and use Paul’s witnessing experience to help open those blind eyes of loved ones to someone who stands ready to save.

SBC – Conformity without Compromise – Acts 21:17

As Paul reaches Jerusalem and visits James, this will mark the last time we will see Paul outside of prison. Pastor Tim talks about how Paul is faced with challenges in Jerusalem to reach the Jews with the Gospel message because of their adherence to the law. So Paul adapts methods and styles to fit the culture he is in willingly subjecting himself to the Law, and becoming part of their culture (1 Cor 9:20) in order for them to respect him and his message. Was adapting to their culture the right thing, should other Christians do this today in order to reach out to others? Tim discusses Paul’s reasoning for this culture change and his response and reaction to it.

Sometimes in our best efforts we will still offend others just like Paul did as He brought a gentile into the temple with him, but if our number one reason is to share Christ then we should be willing to put aside some things and conform without compromise in order to share the message of Christ with others 1 Cor 15:1-4.

“To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.” 1 Cor 9:20

SBC – Some Advise about Advise – Acts 21:1

Tim talks about his experience of being called to plant a Church in Utah and how his father wanted to make sure he was doing the will of God. He compares this to Paul’s situation where he feels the Lord leading him into Jerusalem for ministry, but others are questioning his decision.

When God calls us to do something we must stick to it. If we just feel like maybe God is calling us into ministry, but are not sure. Then maybe it’s not the right ministry or the right time, but when we feel God saying do it without the maybe then we will know for sure that it is God’s will. This is what Paul was saying to others about his journey to Jerusalem. What do we do if others are telling us not to do something that we know is God’s will when it’s given through godly advise? Paul and Jesus both faced this scenario…

Tim concludes by counting the costs and how we can know for sure that God is calling us into ministry. God’s calling will never be an easy path to follow, but it’s only through the difficulties and trials of that calling that we will truly understand the blessing behind it.

“From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”  But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” Mat 16:21-23
